As part of the Conference Team for the Historical Novel Society’s 2024 UK Conference, one of my tasks was interviewing the conference presenters. The program that was put together was BEYOND amazing.

I have been fans of so many of these authors for a long time. You think you kind of keep up with what people are doing, until you really sit down to read their biographies, look at their list of books and accomplishments, and interview them for something like this.

Just HOW many books have you written? How do they manage it all?
Keep track of everything? Who did THEY take advice from?
What do they think makes a great opening for a novel?
What brings them joy? . . .

And did you just tell me that one of your unexpected joys was
when you learned how to fish from Aragorn when on site
in New Zealand for the “Lord of the Rings” Trilogy?
Mind blown – I turned right around to my kids and said,
“You’ll never guess what the author I’m interviewing just told me!”

The journey they’re on is incredibly inspiring. Absolutely amazing what people do, what they share, what advice they offer, how much they cheer each other on, and also, a point that I don’t think can be said enough, how generous and KIND they are.

Lovely experience all around – feeling blessed to be a part of the historical fiction community and to have been a part of this conference.
